Opa Bathily

A graduate of both the Institut National des Arts (INA) and the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers Multimédia Balla Fasséké Kouyaté (CAMM-BFK) in Bamako, where he graduated top of his class in 2015, Bathily has developed a distinctive mixed-media practice spanning painting, sculpture, collage, and installation.

He began his creative journey at a young age in the Miria Art Recycling Workshop, where he experimented with diverse materials such as metal, fabric, and leather. This early experience fostered his fascination with texture and form, shaping his ongoing exploration of the relationship between material and meaning.

Bathily’s work blends archival imagery, calligraphy, and tactile layering, drawing from Mali’s cultural archives and the dynamic urban landscapes of West Africa. His art reflects on memory, identity, and the socio-political tensions of postcolonial Africa, offering reflections on migration, environment, and resilience.

He has participated in several exhibitions and workshops in Mali, Tunisia, Côte d’Ivoire, and Europe, including the Interference – Art of Light project in Tunisia. A laureate of the “Talent de la Cité Nationale” award (2017) and a member of the Kôrè Qualité II program at the Centre Culturel Kôrè in Ségou, Bathily continues to expand his multidisciplinary practice.

At Maison Touré, his work embodies both the rigor of craft and the freedom of experimentation, presenting a Malian voice that bridges tradition and innovation.
